Newtown National Nature Reserve and Old Town Hall

At the Island’s only National Nature Reserve, hay meadows are filled with flowers and butterflies, and rare red squirrels jump through the trees of the ancient woodland.

Tucked away within the tiny hamlet adjoining the National Nature Reserve is the small and quirky Old Town Hall. It’s the only remaining evidence of Newtown’s former importance and was donated to the National Trust by Ferguson’s Gang, a group of eccentrics in the 1930s who battled to save historic places from destruction.

There are footpaths that lead to the harbour, once the site of salt working, and the bird hide is a perfect spot to spy avian seasonal visitors from.
