Alum Bay

Alum Bay is a small but popular beach sitting near the westernmost point of the Island.

The famous Needles Landmark sits on the edge of the bay, giving you the best view of the famous chalk stacks while staying on dry land.

The coloured sand cliffs of Alum Bay are world famous – if you’ve been to the Island before you have probably seen a glass jar filled with layers of colourful sand from the bay at some point, once a nostalgic souvenir from the Island.

The mainly shingle beach is met with crystal clear waters, favoured by locals for swimming and perfect for paddling in.

You can access the beach by heading down on foot via wooden steps that take you through a picturesque chine. There are 185 steps, so be prepared – especially if you’re visiting on a hot day.

Alternatively, you can take a shortcut to the beach by hopping on the iconic chairlift from the Needles Landmark Attraction – the journey down offers some amazing views.

There is parking above the bay, which is free in off peak periods, or you can jump on a bus to get there, with a bus stop directly on site.
